FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: At what age do you wean foals, and what training do you provide to foals prior to them going to their new homes?
A: Generally, we wean foals at 6-months-old. We have found that this is best for their social, emotional, and physical development. In regards to training, we try and prepare our foals for their new lives off of our farm as best we can, as this is what we believe sets them up for long, successful lives! At minimum, they are taught to lead, load, stand tied quietly for grooming and vet/farrier work, and pick up all 4 feet. More often times than not, they are trained for "basic" show prep (including bathing, blow drying, and clipping) and taken to and shown in at least 1 class at a local show prior to leaving our farm. We truly want the very best for our foals, and we know that by providing a solid foundation from birth for them, this sets them up for success for life.

Q: Do you take payments?
A: We do for in-utero (unborn) foals and for suckling (just born/nursing) foals up until weaning age. Generally, we do not take payments for foals that are already weaned/ready to travel, for young stock, or for adult horses.

Q: What should I expect with a foal purchase?
A: All foals are full color/pattern and disease panel tested. We typically use Animal Genetics, Inc for this. All foals are registered with GVHS and once you have finished paying for your foal, we will pay for the GVHS transfer of ownership into your name. Every horse that leaves our farm comes with a current coggins, a current health certificate if crossing state lines, and full veterinary and farrier records.

Q: How much do your horses cost?
A: Our purebred gypsy vanner foals start at $10,000 in-utero.

Q: Do you stand your stallions?
A: Yes! Currently, we plan to offer "Jedi" and "Nimbus" via fresh cooled or frozen semen. At this time, we do not have the facilities to offer outside live cover breedings. However, "Hawk" is currently in driving training in Rural Retreat, Virginia 24368 and his trainers are able to offer hand breeding (live cover) to approved mares!

Q: At what age do you start breeding mares? At what age do you start driving or riding horses?
A: We do not consider breeding a mare until she is at least 4-years-old. Gypsy vanners are a slow-maturing small draft breed, and we (with the professional guidance of our reproductive veterinary team) do not believe in pushing a mare, physically or mentally, before she is ready. In terms of performance, we will start ground driving horses when they are 2-years-old to prepare them to be gently started in cart or under saddle at 3-years-old. We love doing lots of in-hand work with our horses, especially exposure to various natural and manmade trail obstacles.
